Solange wants everyone to know that she is the Anti-Bey:
Solange is set to shock fans on her new album by singing about drug-fueled sex. The pretty 22-year-old, who was a mom at 18, sings about smoking marijuana and making love on a new Lil Wayne duet, called ChampagneChronicNightcap. And she insists every track on her new album Sol-AngeL & The Hadley St. Dreams is written from personal experience. She tells Giant magazine, “I am unapologetic; I don’t write about things unless they’re true. I’m a grown-ass woman and I’ve experienced grown-ass things.”
Here are some promo pics of “Sol-Angel” in some geek goggles and metallic dress, as well as photos from her performance at the House of Blues. She’s definitely trying to step outside of her sister’s shadow with that ‘free-spirited’ steez. Good for her. She also did an interview with Parlour Magazine:
P: You’ve already been married, divorced and become a mother, do you think those experiences have helped or hurt you?
S: It helps. People expect women, especially in R&B, to be very prim and proper and this sort of model. The artists with the best albums have been inspired by situations of pain and growth. I’ve definitely been through a lot in the past few years, so I’m very proud to say that I’ve matured. A marriage, a divorce and having a baby will do that to you.
P: How do you deal with the comparisons to Beyonce?
S: At first I didn’t want to make people uncomfortable in interviews, I didn’t want to come off rude or arrogant. Now, I just really don’t care.
P: Closing words?
S: I want to do things on my own terms and only want to do media where people respect the art form and understand what being an artist is about, without talking about irrelevant things. Those are the outlets I want to be a part of, but right now I have to play the game. I still have challenges because some people feel you only have one shot. But I’m going to continue to make music, no one’s going to tell me this is my last shot.
Well, at least she already got paper, some folks, on the other hand, have to stay grindin regardless.
When I heard Kanye’s “Everything I Am” I instantly fell in love. I felt my story somewhere in his. I felt his frustration yet acceptance of who he was. So I decided to put my own little twist on it:)
This seems rather odd coming from Solange given that her big sis is like the “Industry Queen.” We feel where she’s coming from but we can’t help but to wonder if there’s a little jealousy at play.
Lil Miss Free Spirit has just been named as an ambassador Armani Jeans:
“Armani Jeans expresses my vision of a young, independent, casual lifestyle with a strong and cool, fashion sensibility. Solange epitomises this style perfectly and brings to it that swing so evident in her new single, I Decided,” Giorgio Armani commented on his newest muse.
The profile-boosting partnership couldn’t come at a better time for Solange, whose second album, SoL-AngeL and the Hadley Street Dreams (from which I Decided is taken), is released on August 26 prior to her embarking on a worldwide tour this autumn.
At least she’s got “Plan B” lined up in the likely event her new album flops. It’ll be interesting to see ole girl wearing something other than those baby-doll dresses for a change.
Solange graces the cover of Bust Magazine. Lil Miss Free Spirit also recently lost her “vlogging virginity.”
