“Red Tails” – a film focusing on the daring exploits and social injustices suffered by the famed Tuskegee airmen – has gone into pre-production. The George Lucas movie is expected to detail how the Black airmen successfully escorted thousands of U.S. bombers over Europe during World War II but then returned to America to see German prisoners of war treated better and granted more rights than they were
Lucas is expected to begin shooting the movie by early next year. Producer Rick McCallum issued a statement saying, in part, that the movie will be “a story of incredible adventure and enormous courage.” The Tuskegee airmen began training in July 1941 at the Tuskegee Army Air Field near Montgomery, Alabama. The training was labeled an “experiment” because at the time many whites doubted Blacks could fly planes and handle complicated equipment.
